FESTIVAL REPUBLIC STAGE GUIDE (By SMD) FRIDAY Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – DJ & MC duo. Best known for ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’. Were crap last year. How stupid will you feel if you miss them: 0/10 (Rage being on an’ all)
Does It Offend You, Yeah? – Highly unoriginal 80s revivalists but surprisingly fun live. ‘We Are Rockstars’ and ‘Battle Royale’ their best songs.
Late Of The Pier – Last year’s favour of the month “nu rave” type band. Were crap last year.
The Teenagers – Novelty band from France. Have one hilarious song called ‘Homecoming’ (it’s about sleeping with an American girl) but are otherwise shit.
Friendly Fires – More “nu rave”-type stuff. Not original but quite fun.
Ida Maria – Bjork-style quirky singer from Norway. Probably going to be huge soon.
White Denim – Loud, fuzzy garage rock type thing.
Florence And The Machine – Has the exact same annoying voice as Kate Nash, but her songs are darker and more bluesy. Does a cool cover of ‘Hospital Beds’. Blatantly going to be huge.
These New Puritans – Quite pretentious electro-indie band. Try to turn their gigs into “events”.
SATURDAY Black Kids – Fun if not particularly original band from Florida. ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ is awesome. How stupid will you feel if you miss them: 7/10
Louis XIV – Silly glam-rock band with songs about underaged groupies.
Los Campesinos! – In my opinion the best British band of the past 2 years. You won’t hear a better song than ‘You! Me! Dancing!’ all weekend. My number one band to see this year (yeas, ahead of Rage!).
White Lies – Were hyped for a while around the start of the year but haven’t heard much about them recently.
Fight Like Apes – Only heard one of their songs on the radio once but they sound like a wicked hardcore/industrial noise type band.
Lovvers – Like a much better version of Towers Of London. I hear they are really good live.
Collapsing Cities – Australian indie band, sound a bit like Editors.
SUNDAY The Kills – Used to love them when they first emerged, but they’ve been getting worse with every album. How stupid will you feel if you miss them: 2/10 (They go up against Metallica, The Cribs and CSS, ouch!)
Glasvegas – The most NME-hyped band since Arctic Monkeys. Kinda torn between having a “lads band” image and actually having a much more sophisticated sound. A real love them or hate them band.
Cage The Elephant – Apparently these guys are going to be big. Heard a couple of songs and they didn’t impress much.
The Rascals – Boring indie band from Liverpool. Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys will join them for the last song, guaranteed.
Emmy The Great – Hands down the best UK singer-songwriter in years. Has a twisted mind and hilarious lyrics.
Johnny Foreigner – Awesome melodic hardcore band from Birmingham. Of all the bands on the FR stage, they are the most likely to achieve an underground-mainstream crossover in the next 12 months.
Wild Beasts – Crazy-sounding band from Leeds. Can’t think of anyone they sound like. ‘The Devil’s Crayon’ is ace.
